Download Course FactsheetFoundation Electrics for Mechanical Technicians is a three-day course, aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of individuals working in the mechanical and electrical environment. Those who would benefit from increased awareness of electrical principles and practices as part of their role.
Participants will gain knowledge and understanding through theoretical and practical perspectives. This is the first electrical course any delegate from a mechanical background should enrol on, however this course does not qualify you as an electrician.
The course is delivered at PASS’s dedicated training centre in Stockton-On-Tees. Training can also be provided on your premises for this course. Please contact us for more details.
Course Outline
The course is designed to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge of electrical work, safety, regulations and fault diagnosis, for mechanical technicians cross training.
By completing this specifically structured course it aims to enhance mechanical technician’s skills with a level of expertise in electrical knowledge and help with on the job routine checks and maintenance.
Who is the course for?
The course is designed for mechanical technicians who want to cross-train in electrical fundamentals. It will equip them with the knowledge and skills to carry out first-line electrical maintenance tasks. These tasks include safe isolation of electrical systems, fault diagnosis, replacing and testing of electrical devices, safely and effectively.
This training will assist mechanical technicians in up-skilling their knowledge to perform routine checks and maintenance across various environments, such as maintaining factory assembly lines, manufacturing facilities, and distribution/warehouse centres.

What Does the Course Cover?
- Electrical legislation and regulations
- Electrical safety
- Arc Flash awareness (definition, CAL ratings & how this applies in the workplace)
- Basic principles of electricity
- Safe Isolation
- Testing on 0V circuits (multi-meter use, continuity testing, insulation resistance testing – Megohmmeter)
- Single phase and 3 phase motors
- Variable frequency drives
- Safety Relays (purpose, function & how they differ to normal circuits)
- Practical exercises
Entry Requirements
This course is designed for non-electrical candidates who are looking to cross train for electrical maintenance tasks. To attend this course, you should be an mechanical/ non-electrical engineer or technician.
Assessments
Once the learning modules have been completed you will be assessed through a written examination and a practical examination.
Course Certification
For those who successfully complete the course and assessment you will receive a PASS Certificate of Attendance for Foundation Electrics.
